And the Half Light is part of an ongoing series presented by the Australian Art Orchestra and Multicultural Arts Victoria at Arts Centre Melbourne.

In a series of intimate concerts, Meeting Points brings together unexpected music styles to create electrifying collaborations. Featuring an incredible line-up of international artists accompanied by Australia’s leading contemporary music ensemble, the Australian Art Orchestra(AAO).

In December’s concert, avant-garde sounds fuse with Chinese and Japanese instruments and traditions.

Renowned Chinese zither (guzheng) virtuoso, Mindy Meng Wang, redefines Chinese musical traditions while at the same time reinvigorating them.

And the Half Light includes a work written by Mindy for the AAO that traces her passage from her home in north-western China to the UK and eventually Melbourne, where she now calls home. Cocoon integrates traditional Chinese instruments with the sounds Mindy encountered in the London avant-garde scene.

Composed for a chamber formation, including violin, double bass, trumpet, trombone, percussion and electronics – Cocoon expresses both a yearning for home and a restlessness to travel and discover.

In a rare meeting of musical traditions Mindy will also perform a duo with Tokyo-based, Miyama McQueen-Tokita, a Japanese zither (koto) virtuoso and leading figure in Japan’s contemporary music scene.
