Meeting Points Series

Hand to Earth, Sun 23 Sept 5pm

im/modesty, Sun 9 Dec 5pm

Umi no uzu, Sun 3 Feb 5pm

Discover an unexpected musical connection between Australia’s Arnhem Land and Korea.

One of Korea’s most sought after jazz vocalists, Sunny Kim joins Australian Art Orchestra for the world-premiere of Hand to Earth.

From New York to Melbourne, Sunny has worked with leading artists from around the world. In this intimate concert, her soaring vocals will be paired with those of song men Daniel and David Wilfred, who are bringing down their manikay traditions from the Yolngu homelands of North-Eastern Arnhem Land.

They will be joined by cutting-edge musicians from Korean shamanic traditions, contemporary jazz and electronics. Following their sold-out concert The Hearkening in 2017, Hand to Earth is the second iteration of this musical meeting between Korea and Arnhem Land.

This exciting new-work will be created from an exclusive 12-day music residency. Each year the Australian Art Orchestra escape to the Tasmanian Central Highlands for the ‘Creative Music Intensive’ – bringing musicians together to explore the connections between cultures and musical practice.

What happens when a collection of incredible musicians spend a fortnight in the wilderness? Find out this September.

About Meeting Points Series

A performance series by the Australian Art Orchestra, featuring cutting-edge artists from Australia and Asia. Experience a curated lineup of never-before-seen works, electrifying improvisations and cross-cultural collaborations.

Exclusively for this series, hidden rooms in Arts Centre Melbourne will be transformed into pop-up venues. Hand to Earth will be performed in the Playhouse theatre’s rehearsal room. By day it’s used by actors and musicians as they prepare for their curtain call. This series will see it transformed into an intimate concert space.

Meeting Points Series is a creative collaboration between Australian Art Orchestra and Arts Centre Melbourne. More info here.

Hand to Earth is supported by the City of Melbourne, Portland House Foundation, the Australia-Korea Foundation and Australia Council for the Arts.
