Ringing the Bell Backwards was initially a series of pieces commissioned by a contemporary German orchestra, 'Die Konferenz' comprising 12-14 musicians. Paul Grabowsky's brief was to establish a jazz literature that would refer to European popular standards in the way that most jazz refers to the "American songbook".

Paul then expanded the arrangements for the best 18 improvising musicians across Australia. The Australian Art Orchestra was born and as they say, the rest is history.
