Took The Children Away was written by Archie Roach in 1990 and originally released on “Charcoal Lane”, his 1990 debut album which was a landmark release that highlighted many of the social issues that are at the forefront of Aboriginal life in Australia. Took The Children Away also saw Archie receive the Human Rights Achievement Award; the first time the award had ever been presented to a songwriter.
When the storyline for Ruby's Story was first being discussed with Ruby Hunter, Archie Roach and the AAO creative team (Paul Grabowsky, Ann Moir, Nigel Jamieson, Melinda Collie-Holmes and Patrick Nolan), Archie suggested including this song. Paul Grabowsky then arranged it for the AAO.
This version was recorded live at the Adelaide Festival Theatre in June 2004 as part of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival's presentation of Ruby's Story.
