Joe 'Bebop' Lane

Joe ‘Bebop’ Lane is considered to be the father of bebop in Australia. Whilst in the army he first heard bebop in 1947 at the auditorium of radio 2KY in Sydney After leaving the army Joe rejoined a jazz group with Wally Ledwidge and Jack Craber who introduced him to the renowned conductor and teacher of advanced harmony Roy Maling.

Joe studied with Maling, then introduced vocal bebop into Sydney clubs such as El Rocco, the Arabian, and the Mocambo. In 1949 he formed a vocal group with Ian Gunter, which worked at Sammy Lee’s Club 47.

Joe has been presenting bebop in jazz clubs in Australia and New Zealand since that time. In 1968 he ran his own jazz club/workshop in Auckland. He returned to Sydney in 1971 and worked various venues and festivals.

Joe was given a feature role in Kevin Lucas’s award-winning jazz film Beyond El Rocco. In the mid-1990s he finally released a CD of his work entitled The Arrival.
