Rajeswari Sainath
Bharatanatyam Exponent
In an era where it is often difficult to distinguish between style and substance, flamboyance and finesse, Rajeswari Sainath's art has been hailed as carrying an 'imaginative splendour that goes beyond technique'. Trained in the purist Pandanallur tradition of Bharatanatyam by Indira Rajan of Chennai, Rajeswari has been performing from the age of 10. She had advanced training in Laya (Rhythm) under the maestro Shri Karaikudi R. Mani of Chennai. Her style is characterised by the perfect articulation of the 'adavu' (posture) and 'abhinaya' (expression) elements of dance. She is based in Hyderabad and Chennai, India, where she heads 'Shruti Laya Kendra Natarajaalaya', a fine arts institution founded by the noted mridangam maestro Karaikudi R. Mani. The close association with the classical percussion tradition gives the school and Rajeswari's own performances, a sound foundation in the laya, the rhythmic underpinnings of dance.
In 1978, she was named the 'most talented dancer of the year' by the Andhra Pradesh State Government, an award that was soon followed by the title of 'Nritya Kala Choodamani'.
In the firm belief that the artiste is always a student of the art, Rajeswari spends a significant amount of time exploring new areas in dance while constantly rediscovering the depths of the rich Bharatanatyam tradition. She continually renews and refreshes her artistic spirit through collaborative performances and through her intense involvement in the development of her students. Rajeswari, a commerce and law graduate, actively promotes the larger cause of art through lecture-demonstrations for academic and cultural institutions.
