bridging the gap between contemporary music and ancient indigenous music.

Crossing Roper Bar has kicked off their 2008 tour with a sold out performance and left the audience wanting more.

Crossing Roper Bar is a fusion of contemporary jazz and traditional indigenous music and brings together the Wagilak Gujarra/Nyilapidgi people of Ngukarr and the Australian Art Orchestra.

They've performed at the Garma Festival, FINA World Championships and the Queensland Music Festival.

The name Crossing Roper Bar is metaphor for bridging the gap between contemporary music and ancient indigenous music.

The name is also significant because it's a reality for the people living near the remote town of Ngukarr.

The town is cut off for several months a year by the Roper River when the water levels engulf all but the highest ground.

The roper bar is the point where you can cross the river once the water level drops again.

The name is a fitting metaphor for the group's fusion of traditional indigenous song and a western mix of classical jazz and contemporary music.
