2022 Creative Music Intensive Satellites

Introducing Creative Music Intensive Satellites

New in 2022, we are excited to present not one, but three Creative Music Intensives. For the first time, we are partnering with Four Winds to establish a 5-day ‘satellite’ CMI in Bermagui (NSW) for its education series ‘The Create and Inspire Program’, in addition to the flagship CMI in Tarraleah. Additionally, we are also partnering with Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival across a 3-day residency in the UK. Read on for more information about each of the programs and how to apply:

CMI: UK

14 JUNE – 16 JUNE 2022 (3 Days)

Bringing our collaborative approach to Huddersfield, the AAO and HCMF will provide a creative space for four selected UK-based musicians over the course of 3 days. The AAO’s roster of players, which will include David and Daniel Wilfred, Peter Knight and Aviva Endean, will develop new works with the selected participants, echoing the spirit of creative exchange found at the AAO’s Creative Music Intensive in Tasmania.

CMI: FOUR WINDS

27 JUNE – 1 JULY 2022 (5 Days)

Located on Yuin Country, CMI Four Winds is based upon the format of the flagship CMI in Tarraleah. Across 5 days, participants at Four Winds will improvise in small ensemble workshops, daily lectures and open group practical sessions guided by a diverse faculty of artists, including Yolŋu songmen Daniel and David Wilfred, Korean vocalist Sunny Kim, bassists Helen Svoboda and Chris Hale, and AAO Artistic Director Peter Knight. Diverse creative processes and collaborations are encouraged among participants responding to the natural environment and dynamic of the group. Full and partial bursaries are available to support participants facing financial hardship. The full fee to participate at CMI Four Winds is $800 excluding travel to and from Bermagui. The full fee includes accommodation in Bermagui, catered lunch each day and transport between Bermagui and Four Winds.

CMI: Tarraleah

14 - 24 SEPTEMBER 2022 (10 Days)

The flagship CMI Tarraleah (10 days) is located in the central highlands of Tasmania, on Palawa Country. The residency is made up of daily lectures, small ensemble workshops and open group practical sessions bringing together the extraordinary cultural traditions of Arnhem Land and Korea with contemporary art music approaches to improvisation and collaboration.

Joining us for this year’s iteration will be some of Australia’s finest contemporary musicians including Korean P'ansori singer Bae Il Dong, drummer Simon Barker, trumpeter Scott Tinkler, vocalist Sunny Kim, AAO Artistic Director, Peter Knight & others to be announced.

In 2022, the AAO is pleased to announce the introduction of two full scholarships: the Nexus Arts Scholarship for a South Australian musician from a culturally and linguistically diverse or First Nations background; and the Tasmanian Scholarship for a musician based in Tasmania. Full and partial bursaries are also available to support participants facing financial hardship. The full fee to participate at CMI Tarraleah is $1950 which excludes travel to and from Hobart. The full fee includes accommodation in Tarraleah, catered lunch each day and charter bus transport between Hobart and Tarraleah.

We are grateful to our friends at Nexus Arts and a supporter who wishes to remain anonymous, for providing scholarships to the CMI.
