Three music events in one day across Melbourne CBD

Friday 28 November

Sonic City is an innovative annual event to transform Melbourne's CBD into a vibrant hub for creative music. Experience three distinct performances by the Australian Art Orchestra across one evening, coming up close with experimental music, in three diverse venues within the CBD including two free concerts and once ticketed event, at Section 8, the Block Arcade and the Athenaeum Theatre.

At 3pm Section 8 will host Ask The Ages, some of Melbourne’s elite jazz musicians in a free-to-attend performance that forges new creative territory and highlights an Australian approach to improvising.

From 5pm under the baton of Artistic Director Aaron Choulai, and investigating new experimental processes in classical music making, experience Sono-Kinetic Conducting, a language of conducting developed by Choulai that facilitates spontaneous composition through a lexicon and hand gestures and baton movements.

Culminating in a ticketed performance at 7.30pm at the Athenaeum Theatre II, Australian Art Orchestra will premiere a bold new work, To Kill a Magic We Got Used To, that brings together elements of jazz, classical and hip-hop that connects creative music to a new generation.
